Description
After ten years of study the second book for afrobeat is now completed! This method provides a comprehensive collection of original technical studies designed to help drummers achieve the perfect flow with their playing.
The book combines practicing tecniques from classic Western drum methods such as Reed, Riley and Chaffee systems with West African rhythmic thinking derived from conversations I’ve had with Baba Allen and other African musicians.
Here is a video sample of playing along with one of the afrobeat practice track from the CD

Here are some Chapters with some sample of etudes from the CD:
- “Anti back-beat” drumming
- Improving weak hand tecnique
- Hi-hat foot
- Syncopation between both hands
- “Multi-syncopation” exercises
- Play-along tracks (totaly analog-original tracks, no digital!)
This all designed to give players an edge in studio or on stage.
I’m sure this new material will be a great asset for any drummer looking to expand their knowledge within Afrobeat, just like Baba Allen said
“There is no end!”
I was looking for some clues on how to play Tony Allen’s afrobeat drumming , and these transcriptions are really helpful. They are clear to follow and break down the different kit elements so you can learn the pattern gradually by adding each instruments until you can play it in full. I did detect a couple of typos, though, I think, which is a shame in such a meticulous rendering: a missing notation for a hi-hat pedal here and there just threw me off and made it more difficult to follow the score than it should have been. Plus, I think some proofreading and language editing on the Intro would have been useful. But these are small things and can probably be easily corrected. All in all, many thanks to Anil for this generous and skillful labour of love.
